Love Our Home & Rid It of Plastic!

Nomo Straws aims to provide high-quality sustainable products that help rid our world of plastic!

Our Story

Founder, Victoria O., is first generation American, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. In the Fall of 2017, Victoria was granted to study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, as a college student. Living there for four months, Victoria came face to face with the plastic epidemic that was tarnishing the island’s beaches and streets. During her trip, she also witnessed the stride of European and Australian businesses minimizing their use of plastic by implementing alternatives such as the use of paper straws in restaurants. Seeing the distress caused by the use of plastic, Victoria wondered why the U.S. was not fighting against such pollutants when other countries were already reducing a significant amount of plastic contamination. When arriving back to New York City, Victoria began brainstorming how to begin distributing paper straws to local businesses to initiate the reduction of plastic waste. Shortly after, at the end of summer 2018, Nomo (short for no more) Straws was created. As Victoria indulged herself in research for plastic alternatives, she realized she was selling her brand short. Why stop at straws? Why not present people with a magnitude of products that were sustainable, plastic-free, cruelty-free, and organic? Since then, Victoria has been working on starter-kits to help people reduce their waste and use products that are not only healthy for the environment, but for people themselves.

Our Why

The average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year. Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution finds its way into our oceans. Currently, it is estimated that there are 100 million tons of plastic in oceans around the world. Fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals can become entangled in or ingest plastic debris causing suffocation, starvation, and drowning. It is also estimated that at least 100,000 land mammals and birds die from plastic each year. What's worse, It takes approximately 1000 years for some plastic products to decompose fully. Majority of plastic breaks down into micro plastics that are found in water, food, and our air. The average American adult consumes between 126 and 142 tiny particles of plastic every day and inhales another 132-170 plastic bits daily too. Plastic has been linked to chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) that may cause cancer, heart disease, and, or diabetes. Studies also show greenhouse gases are emitted as common plastics degrade in the environment which is known to cause global warming.
